T visas for survivors of trafficking

The T visa is for people who were brought to or held in the United States through force, fraud, or coercion, and made to work or to perform commercial sex acts. People whose work or body is controlled through pressure, deception, or fear can qualify.

A police report is not required to obtain a T visa, unlike a U visa.

What it can look like

Trafficking usually looks ordinary. A debt that never gets smaller. Someone else keeping your passport. Wages that never come. A threat about your family back home. A job that turned out to be something else.

You can qualify even if you were paid, could come and go, and chose to come here.

What it gives you

T status lasts four years and comes with permission to work. Certain family members can be included, and for applicants under 21 that can extend to parents and younger unmarried siblings.

After three years in T status, or earlier if the investigation or prosecution has finished, you may be able to apply for a green card.
